Mettur Dam, the largest dam in Tamil Nadu, was built in 1934 under the supervision of Irish engineer Vincent Hart. It took nine years and the effort of 17,000 men to complete the dam project, making it a monumental feat of engineering. The funds for the project were provided from the taxes collected in the Madras Presidency, with Sir C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer spearheading the initiative.

Capacity and Dimensions:
The Mettur Dam spans approximately 1,700 meters (5,600 feet) across the river Kaveri, creating the Stanley Reservoir. Its maximum height is 214 feet (65 meters), and its maximum capacity is 93.47 tmc ft. The dam’s area of the reservoir covers 42.5 square kilometers, providing irrigation and drinking water facilities for more than 12 districts of Tamil Nadu.

The dam has been central to the Kaveri River water dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Due to subsequent dams constructed across the Cauvery and its tributaries in Karnataka, Mettur Dam faces water scarcity during lean seasons, leading to tensions between the states. Efforts by governments, the Supreme Court, and the Cauvery Tribunal have yet to resolve the dispute, with the tribunal specifying an annual release of 192 tmcft by Karnataka to Tamil Nadu.
