My experience after visiting the Payana Vintage Car Museum

I recently visited the Payana Vintage Car Museum in Mysore, and it turned out to be quite a unique experience. As we headed towards the museum, we found a pure vegetarian restaurant right next to it, offering tasty dosas and idlis – a perfect spot for breakfast before starting the tour.

Although I’m from Mysore, I was returning from a trip to Bengaluru when I decided to visit the Payana Vintage Car Museum. This place had been on my radar, and since it is on the way to my home (Mysore city), it felt like the perfect time to check it out. Arriving early at around 9 a.m., we were welcomed with a modest Rs. 50 ticket price for adults, while kids under 12 could enter for free.

The moment we stepped inside, we were greeted by an array of beautifully maintained vintage cars, each with its own unique story. I couldn’t help but be impressed by the cars on display, including those that once belonged to notable figures like Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar and Dr. Vishnuvardhan. One of the highlights for me was seeing the Fiat from 1925 and a Hudson model from 1947, both gleaming with that classic, royal charm.

I loved the detailed descriptions of each car, from the evolution of wheels to the specifics of engines. For a car enthusiast or even just a curious visitor like me, seeing all the intricate details of these vehicles – from the wiring to the speed capabilities – was both educational and fascinating. Some cars, like the 1949 Maharaja’s car with a top speed of 137 km/h, left me in awe.

One thing to note is that the museum isn’t air-conditioned, and since I visited on a sunny day, it did get a bit warm. If you’re planning to go, I’d recommend visiting either in the morning or after 5 p.m. to avoid the heat, especially as Mysore can get quite hot during the day.

In the end, it was a delightful experience that I’d recommend to anyone, especially families or those passionate about vintage cars. With a quick 15-20 minute drive from Mysore city, Payana is easily accessible and worth the visit.

Attached Manjusha Museum

While visiting the Museum, I stumbled upon something unexpected—a charming little museum tucked inside, called the Manjusha Museum. As someone who enjoys exploring history, I was instantly drawn in. What surprised me was the sheer variety of artifacts on display, from old kitchen tools to beautifully preserved vintage items like typewriters and gramophones. Each item seemed to have its own story, transporting me to a different era.

One section of the museum was dedicated to Performing Arts, showcasing instruments and relics tied to Karnataka’s artistic traditions. It felt like a hidden treasure, complementing the grand display of vintage cars just outside. I found myself marveling at how well these two different aspects—automobiles and cultural artifacts—came together under one roof. For anyone visiting Payana, the Manjusha Museum adds another layer to the experience, making it not just a car lover’s dream but also a place where history and heritage come alive.
