History of Brindavan Gardens

Let’s delve into the rich history of Brindavan Gardens, a testament to Mysore’s architectural and horticultural heritage.

The idea for the gardens was conceived by Sir Mirza Ismail, the then Diwan of Mysore, who aimed to enhance the natural beauty surrounding the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) Dam. Construction began in 1927 and concluded in 1932.

The gardens were designed by Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel, a German botanist and landscape designer renowned for his work in India.

Spanning 60 acres, the Brindavan Gardens are adjacent to the KRS Dam, which was constructed across the Kaveri River. The dam itself was completed between 1911 and 1932.

The gardens feature terraced layouts, vibrant flowerbeds, and illuminated fountains, including a musical fountain added in 1985.

Today, Brindavan Gardens attracts nearly 2 million visitors annually, making it one of Mysore’s top tourist destinations.

The garden is maintained by the Cauvery Niravari Nigama (Cauvery Irrigation Corporation), a Government of Karnataka enterprise.

Adjoining it is also a fruit orchard spread across 75 acres and two horticultural farms, Nagavana (30 acres) and Chandravana (5 acres).

The garden is open to the public year-round, and an entry fee is charged. In the year 2003–2004, the gate collection was Rs. 2.07 crores, which increased to Rs 2.69 crores in 2004-05 and Rs 4.3 crores in 2005–06. This revenue is shared between Cauvery Niravari Nigam and Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) in the ratio 3:1.

The garden was renovated in 2005 at a cost of Rs. 50 million. The renovation included sprucing up the musical fountain using a digitized system and repairs of dysfunctional fountains.

In 2007, the gardens were closed for a brief duration as a safety measure to avoid trouble related to the Cauvery water dispute.

Isn’t it fascinating how a vision from the 1920s continues to enchant visitors nearly a century later?

Design and Layout

Let’s explore the layout and design of Brindavan Gardens, a masterpiece of symmetry and beauty.

The layout follows the ancient Mughal style, with three terraces laid out in symmetry, ending in a horseshoe shape.

The garden is divided into two main sections: North Brindavan and South Brindavan, separated by the Kaveri River.

North Brindavan features four terraces adorned with picturesque flower beds and rows of ornamental trees. Small fountains with colored lighting enhance the charm of this area. Additionally, there’s a nursery here, showcasing a variety of plants.

South Brindavan is home to the Cauvery Statue, a prominent landmark. In front of this statue lies the Kaveramma Circle, where visitors can admire magnificent water fountains illuminated at night.

A walkway bridge connects the two sections, allowing visitors to explore the entire garden seamlessly. The garden also includes a children’s park, featuring slides and other structures for young visitors to enjoy.

The Brindavan Gardens are renowned for their illuminated fountains, topiary works (sculptures of animals created by clipping shrubs), pergolas (shaded passageways covered by creepers), and gazebos. The main attraction is the musical fountain, where bursts of water are synchronized to music. There’s also a lake within the garden with boating facilities available for visitors.

An endless expanse of green, dotted with colorful blooms, the terraced gardens are well-laid and admired for their symmetrical design. The highlight for visitors is the musical fountain, a synchronized water dance accompanied by music and lights.

Isn’t it amazing how each section offers a unique experience, blending natural beauty with architectural elegance?

In my personal opinion, the musical fountain doesn’t have that “wow” factor for me. However, if you have kids in your family or if you’ve never experienced a musical fountain before, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this delightful show. The combination of music, lights, and dancing water creates a fun and engaging experience for families and first-time visitors.

Brindavan Gardens Boating

Brindavan Gardens offers a delightful boating experience, allowing visitors to enjoy the serene waters and picturesque surroundings. Operated by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC), the boating service provides a unique perspective of the garden’s beauty.

The boat ride typically takes visitors from the North Garden to the South Part of the Garden, offering a tranquil journey beneath the dam.

As of November 2024, boating services have been temporarily suspended due to water leakage issues in the bridge connecting the north and south sections of the garden.

The bridge has developed cracks, causing excessive leakage and making it challenging to maintain the water levels necessary for boating. Repairs are estimated to take 2-3 months, and visitors are advised to check the current status before planning their visit.

Once operational, the boating experience is both enjoyable and affordable.
