History of Brindavan Gardens

The idea for the gardens was conceived by Sir Mirza Ismail, the then Diwan of Mysore, who aimed to enhance the natural beauty surrounding the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) Dam. Construction began in 1927 and concluded in 1932.
The gardens were designed by Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel, a German botanist and landscape designer renowned for his work in India.
Spanning 60 acres, the Brindavan Gardens are adjacent to the KRS Dam, which was constructed across the Kaveri River. The dam itself was completed between 1911 and 1932.
The gardens feature terraced layouts, vibrant flowerbeds, and illuminated fountains, including a musical fountain added in 1985.
Today, Brindavan Gardens attracts nearly 2 million visitors annually, making it one of Mysore’s top tourist destinations.

The garden was renovated in 2005 at a cost of Rs. 50 million. The renovation included sprucing up the musical fountain using a digitized system and repairs of dysfunctional fountains.
In 2007, the gardens were closed for a brief duration as a safety measure to avoid trouble related to the Cauvery water dispute.

In my personal opinion, the musical fountain doesn’t have that “wow” factor for me. As of November 2024, boating services have been temporarily suspended due to water leakage issues in the bridge connecting the north and south sections of the garden.
The bridge has developed cracks, causing excessive leakage and making it challenging to maintain the water levels necessary for boating. Repairs are estimated to take 2-3 months, and visitors are advised to check the current status before planning their visit.
